There are two kinds of conversations you’ll have in Canggu: one is about surf conditions, and the other is about where to find the best poke bowl. After hearing the same recommendation for three days straight, I stopped pretending I wasn’t curious.
I ended up at a small café tucked away from the busier streets — more because it was nearby than because I’d planned to go there. I ordered a tuna poke bowl without thinking too much about it.
Fresh Tuna, Warm Rice, and Canggu Heat
The bowl arrived simple and vibrant: warm rice, fresh tuna, avocado, mango, cucumber, edamame, and enough lime to pull everything together. It was surprisingly balanced — exactly what I needed after spending the morning riding between rice fields in the humid Bali heat.
It wasn’t the kind of meal that changes your life. Bali has enough places trying to convince you of that already.
It was just fresh, filling, and honest — the sort of lunch that makes you slow down for half an hour before getting back on a scooter with salt still drying on your arms.
Why Good Enough is Reason Enough
I never went searching for a “better” poke bowl in Canggu after that afternoon. Maybe there was one hidden down another alleyway. Maybe not.
Sometimes the first place you wander into is good enough, and that’s reason enough to leave it there.
Where Else to Eat Poke in Canggu
If you’d rather choose than wander, here is what Canggu actually has. Only one place in the village is built around poke; everywhere else keeps a bowl on a wider menu, which matters more than it sounds. A dedicated shop will have three or four tuna variations. A brunch café will have one, and it will be fine.
Poke Poke — Jalan Munduk Catu
The only spot in Canggu that exists for poke and nothing else. Open from late morning until early evening, and connected to the roti place next door, so you can order across both menus from the same table. This is the one to pick if you want the bowl to be the point of the meal rather than an item on it.
Unibowl — Jalan Sempol, Pererenan
North of the main Canggu strip, in Pererenan. Poke and salad bowls, generous portions, and the strongest vegetarian and vegan options of anything on this list. Opens at midday, so it’s lunch onwards only — no use if you’re coming off a dawn surf.
Moana Fish Eatery — Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong
A seafood restaurant rather than a bowl shop, with Hawaiian and Tahitian raw fish dishes on the menu alongside grilled mains. It is the most expensive place here by a clear margin, and it is the one to choose if you want dinner rather than a quick lunch. Open from morning until late.
Mowies — Jalan Pantai Berawa
Berawa, with a pool and shaded seating. The tuna poke is one of the dishes they lead with, and the place is set up for staying a while rather than eating and leaving. Good if you want an afternoon somewhere with wifi and a swim.
Kembali — Berawa
Attached to a gym, which tells you what the menu is like: high protein, light, built for people who came from a workout. The poke bowl here is a functional lunch rather than an occasion. Open early, closes late.
The Avocado Factory — Jalan Batu Mejan
Primarily a breakfast and brunch place, open from seven in the morning until eleven at night — by far the widest hours on this list. Poke is a side of what they do rather than the centre, but it’s the only option here if you want a bowl at ten at night.
Barboa — Jalan Canggu Padang Linjong
A busy breakfast café with a chicken poke bowl on the menu. Loud, social, usually full. Come here if you want the room more than the fish.
Canggu Food & Travel Tips
What to look for. Skip the heavily advertised Instagram cafés at least once and duck into the quieter side-street places on or around Jalan Batu Bolong or Jalan Echo Beach. The bowl will cost less and arrive faster.
Where to base yourself. Batu Bolong and Munduk Catu put you within walking distance of most of this list. Berawa is a separate cluster fifteen minutes south by scooter, and Pererenan is fifteen minutes north. Choosing your area chooses your lunch.
Timing. Right after a morning surf session or a long scooter ride through the rice fields, when you need something light yet fresh. Note that the dedicated poke shop opens late morning and the Pererenan option not until midday — if you’re eating before eleven, the brunch cafés are your only real choice.
Budget. Local bowls usually range between 60,000 and 90,000 IDR (roughly $4–6) — clean, fresh, and budget-friendly. The seafood restaurants run two to three times that.
Getting there. Everything on this list is scooter distance from central Canggu. Nothing here needs a car, and parking is easier on two wheels everywhere except Batu Bolong at sunset.
