It’s 6am and I still haven’t figured out what I’m doing here, standing in an empty gravel parking lot above the Algarve with my coffee going cold in my hand.
I’d read that Praia da Marinha was one of those beaches — the kind that ends up on lists, the kind people drive two hours for. I almost skipped it because of that. But I got there before the tour buses, before the family in the rental car circling for a parking spot, and for maybe forty minutes it was just me and a man walking his dog along the clifftop path.
The First Viewpoint Everyone Photographs
The viewpoint near the parking lot is the one everyone photographs — orange-gold cliffs, a scattering of sea stacks, water so clear it looks fake in pictures and somehow looks more fake in person.
Finding a Second Viewpoint Above the Algarve Coastline
I walked west along the dirt path instead, past the panels explaining how the cliffs are slowly disappearing, a few millimeters a year, and found a second viewpoint higher up, maybe fifty meters above the sand. From there the arches locals call “the heart of the Algarve” lined up just right. I didn’t take a photo of it. I don’t know why.
I didn’t go down the steps to the beach itself, though there were plenty — a long staircase switchbacking down the cliff face. Something about staying up top, coffee in hand, watching the light change on the rock, felt like enough. I’ve stopped needing to touch every place I visit to feel like I was there.
Practical Tips for Visiting Praia da Marinha
If you’re thinking about it: Praia da Marinha sits a short drive east of Carvoeiro, well signposted once you’re on Estrada da Marinha.
- Go early: before 9am if you can — by mid-morning in summer the lot fills and cars start lining the road.
- Food and water: there’s a beach bar down on the sand from May to September, but nothing up top, so bring your own water.
- Keep walking: the clifftop trail continues both directions if you want more — west toward Carvalho, east toward Senhora da Rocha — and it’s flat enough, just bring shoes that can handle loose stone.
- Watch the edges. They’re not exaggerating about that part.
